The Right And Wrong Ways to Handle Your Clients' Titles When Submitting Them As Sources
PLUS: Don't miss our Top Tier Talk TODAY at 12:30 PT/3:30 ET (there's still time to RSVP!)
Happy Wednesday, Top Tier Community!
We’re getting close to the holidays. Getting excited? We are! It’s been a fantastic year but we’re looking forward to a little R&R later in December. Don’t worry, we still have some newsletters to send out before then and want to dive right in here.
First of all: One final reminder that TODAY is our December Top Tier Talk, at 12:30 PT/3:30 ET. You still have time to sign up and submit your question(s)! This will be an open forum where you can ask anything, but we can also chat about the state of the media industry — staff movement/layoffs/budget cuts/pubs folding. We can also discuss pitching, how things work with various outlets, gift guides, sources/experts, best practices, writer pet peeves, and more! Anything is on the table that you want to discuss.
Top Tier Talks are open to ALL paid subscribers. If you can’t make it, we’ll send out a video recording after the session so you can still watch at a later date — but the more people who join us today, the more robust the session will be!
Want to start the new year off on the right foot? We’re now booking for Jan/Feb 2023 consulting sessions …. our available slots are going fast, so be sure to reserve yours today! You can learn more about our sessions here; just fill out our contact form with your session preferences and we’ll respond with pricing/availability.
Now to today’s topic:
How to handle your client's titles when submitting them as sources
You have the perfect source to pitch a writer for a story they are working on. But before you send an email out about your client, it’s important that you handle their title correctly. When it comes to submitting a client as a source, there are many things to think about:
Is your client attached to a brand that needs to be included in the story?
Does your client have a bunch of titles that you’re hoping will be included?
Is there one title in particular that MUST be in the story in order for you to make your client happy?
Does your source maybe not have the right title at the moment but has an amazing history that makes them a viable candidate for the story?
As writers, we receive so many pitches with experts to talk about story subjects we are working on — but many times, publicists overlook the importance of properly handling a potential source’s title when reaching out to us. This may sound like a no-brainer and you may think you’re doing it right (and you very well could be!) but there are some important things to know about how to handle this that will improve your chances of inclusion in a story AND walking away with a clip that makes your client happy.
